after the Princess of Wales’s fatal car crash, George Stephanopoulos enthused to Christo­pher Hitchens: “Tony Blair’s han­dling this really well. This is his Okla­homa City.” As Hitchens remarked, this is the way these peo­ple think.

A war may now be an Over­seas Con­tin­gency Oper­a­tion and pump­ing cyanide into the New York Sub­way a Man-​​Caused Dis­as­ter, but Peti­tion­ing the Gov­ern­ment for Redress of Griev­ances is still plain old Ter­ror­ism.
