I greatly admire Ramesh Ponnuru, but sometimes I worry that he gets just a wee bit esoteric in discussing possible shifts and vagaries in the tides, currents, and occasional St. Elmo’s Fire that go hand in hand with votes in a mess like this when everybody involved from the ruling party has forgotten what the original goal was.

If Senator Webb of Virginia votes against the bill, for example, doesn’t that increase the pain of a yes vote for the three vulnerable House Democrats from that state? And the same logic applies to several other states.

Oh. Wait. Never mind. Sorry. We need to worry about this. And, as for the 300 million Americans that these people are ripping the futures away from so that they can give their lawyer buddies or their union buddies or their Wall Street buddies a wink-wink, well, screw them.

So I guess if it can’t be put in those terms it must come down to which representative is going to feel pain as a result of the senator from his state having reversed his vote.
